He married Laura Esta Watkins on August 17, 1924, in Reedy, West Virginia. They had one son, Edsel Ernest Alfred. After Esta's death, he married Ola Hoffman on May 10, 1941, in Washington County, Ohio.
Duane had one brother, James Leo Alfred; and three sisters, Olga Nelia Alfred Ott, Imogene M. Alfred Thomas, and Edna Maxine Alfred Smith.
He died in July 1987 in Youngtown, Arizona, at the age of 82.
