Her son also inherited and ruled the counties of Schleswig and Holstein upon his uncle, Adolf VIII's death. She was known Helvig of Schaudenburg but some source state “Hedwig.” She was a Duchess of Schlewig and a Countess of Holstein. She was the daughter of Gerhard VI of Holstein-Rendsburg and his wife, Catherine Elizabeth of Brunswick-Luneburg. Through her father, she was a direct-bloodline descendant of King Eric V of Denmark, and through her mother, she was a direct-bloodline descendant of King Abel of Denmark. On April 18, 1417 she married Prince Balthasar of Meckleburg, who died of the plague in 1421 leaving the couple childless. In 1423 she married Dietrich, Count of Oldenburg and they produced three sons and a daughter with the oldest son Christian becoming the King of Denmark.
