On March 31, 1930, Officer Costello and his partner, Officer Elmer Hoffman, pulled over a car on 7th Street near Lucas Avenue in Los Angeles.
As Costello approached the car, the driver pulled a gun, and ordered Costello to walk back toward the police car. Hoffman pulled his gun and fired one shot, hitting the driver in the leg. The driver returned fire. One of his shots pierced Costello's heart, and he died at the scene.
Officer Costello joined the LAPD on Oct. 1, 1924, and was engaged to be married in June 1930.
