Henry S. Comstock, was born Aug. 15, 1858 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended school until fifteen years of age, and then started teaching. Seven years later he begin the study of law at Arcadia, Wis., in the office of E.C. Higbee, later a circuit judge in La Crosse. Subsequently, he took a law course at the University of Wisconsin, and graduated in the class of 1883. On July 1st of that year, he formed a partnership with his former teacher under the firm name of Higbee and Comstock.

In December, 1884, he moved to Barron, Barron County, Wis., and in the following May moved to Cumberland in the same county, where he made his home. In 1866 he was elected district attorney, served out his term, but refused to run for reelection. In the spring of 1889 he was elected county judge. He later served as city attorney, city clerk and city clerk. He was also active in the Republican party.

On Nov. 6, 1887 he was united in marriage to Jennie Rathbone.
