J. C. Negley was born April 30, 1845, in Bradford county, Pennsylvania, and died at his home in Ottawa, Kansas, May 26, 1910.

In 1867 Mr. Negley was united in marriage to Miss Mary J. Kennedy. To this union were born four children, three of whom died in infancy and one in early manhood.

Mrs. Negley died in 1875, and in 1876 he was again married to Rebecca Jane Norris, of Huntington county, Pennsylvania. To this union were born seven children, two of whom passed away in infancy, and five, three sons, D. E., E. H. and T. V. Negley, and two daughters, Mrs. K. J. Shotts and Mrs. Bessie Cobb, all of Kansas, and one step-daughter, Mrs. Walter McLaughlin, of Decatur City, Iowa.

His second wife died August 17, 1902, and in the spring of 1907 Mr. Negley was married the third time to Mrs. Leona[sic] Jay, of Decatur City, who with his five children and one step-daughter and one stepson, Mr. Bert Jay, of Indianaola, are left to mourn the loss of husband and father.

Mr. Negley served in the civil war for about two years, coming out and carrying with him the honor of a brave and true soldier. He was one of Decatur's highly respected citizens for a number of years, moving to Kansas about two years ago.

His body was brought to Decatur City, funeral services being held Sunday, May 29th, interment being in the Decatur City cemetery.
