Herbert D. Allen, who died very suddenly at his home in Arcade on Thursday, January 15th, was born in Dayton, Saratoga County, NY in 1857, the son of Ellery Allen and his wife Emily Allen. His boyhood days were spent there, where he received a good education. Later he moved to Elma and from there came to Arcade in 1876 where he went into partnership with the late Isaac Smith in the woolen mill. He continued in this business for several years. He finally sold his interest to the late W. H. Wilson and went into the livery business with the late John Spencer, one of the pioneer stage men of this section. After a few years he sold out and went to East Elma where he went into the woolen manufacturing business and remained there for four years. He came back to Arcade and went into partnership with O.J. Allen in the livery business. He old out his interest after about three years and has since worked at various things about the village.
Mr. Allen was a well educated and exceptionally intelligent man, well read and could converse intelligently on most any topic. He was a prominent Democrat and for many years a member of the education board, on which he was a valued member.
He was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Spencer on February 4th, 1878. Two children were born to them, Mr. George Allen of Arcade, and Mrs. Victor THomas of Buffalo. Besides his wife and two children, he is survived by two brothers, Henry L. Allen of Alden and Walter Allen of Buffalo, and two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Smith of Oklahoma and Mrs. Bertha Hatch of East Elma.
The funeral services were held at the home on East Main street on Saturday and were largely attended. Interment in Rural Cemetery. Six of Arcade's most prominent citizens acted as pall bearers. They were J.H. Francis, V.C. Beebe, F.M. Foote, W.E. Stearns, E.E. Churchill and R.J. Tilton.
Among those from out-of-town who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Ira Ostrander of Buffalo, Mrs. William Thomas of Buffalo, Leonard Hatch of East Aurora, Isaac Hemstred, Lincoln Hemstred of Buffalo, Frank Hatch and wife of East Elma, Henry Allen and wife of Alden, Walter Allen of Buffalo, James Allen of Yorkshire, Mrs. Erie Colby of Springville, O.J. Allen of Buffalo.
