Lemuel is mentioned continuously in Byrd's Secret Diary from 1739 to 1741.

In 1750 Lemuel joined his brother, Bird Thomas Lanier in Duplin County, NC. After arriving in Duplin, he received several grants, and bought many large tracts of land; in 1756, he sold all but one, and in October he deeded this to his son, Thomas, the land, the house with all the furnishings, the outbuildings, slaves, and Indian corn, " as I am about to remove out of the aforesaid Province of North Carolina".

He moved to Georgia, which is shown in the Colonial Records, naming him as a headright in 1756. Near Rockyford, Screven County, is an historical marker which lists him, with others, as being one of the earliest settlers.

John lived first in Burke County, then Bryan County and finally Bulloch County, without ever moving. When Bulloch County was formed in February of 1796, the boundary lines read: - "to begin at John Laniers, including the same on the Ogeechee River, and thence a direct line to be drawn to where Lotts Creek emties (sic) into the Canouchee River, then up the Canouchee River, to the Montgomery line, thence along the said line to the Ogeechee River, and down the said River to the beginning, which county will be called Bulloch." In June 1771, Lemuel petitioned for 200 acres of land in St. George Parish, saying that "he had long been a resident of Georgia, had a wife and one child". This petition was granted in August by the Governor. Lemuel Lanier was most active during the Revolution, as shown in the Revolutionary Records of Georgia. In 1778 he was appointed Sheriff for the County of Burke; in May of that year he was paid L 156 (pounds) by the State for services in the Revolution; the same year he was made Captain of those guarding the jail, and was allowed L 100 over and above his pay for services done the State: and up to 1781 was appointed for many other duties. He was a Refugee Soldier, and received Certificate #154 for 250 acres of Bounty land. In May 1782 he was chosen a member of the Executive Council. In the list of Georgia Troops he is listed as a Captain. In May 1784 he was elected Justice of the Peace for Burke County; and when Screven County was formed from Burke in 1793, Lemuel Lanier was then living in the new county where he became the first Register of Probate.
