Verneal Maxine Burkey was born on August 28, 1922, in Seward, NE to Levi Elliott Alley and Cora Alice (Holloway) Alley and passed away on August, 4, 2018, in Seward, NE at the age of 95 years, 11 months and 7 days.

Verneal grew up in Seward where she attended and graduated from Seward High School in the Class of 1940.

She moved to California with her sister Zella where they worked at Interstate Aircraft during W.W. II. It was there that she met and married Carl H. Saager on December 12, 1944. Carl passed away unexpectedly on January 29, 1949.

Verneal moved back to Seward in 1954. She worked at Seward Bowl as a cook and waitress.

On June 6, 1960, Verneal married Melvin M. Burkey in Seward and they made their home on a farm between Beaver Crossing and Milford. Melvin passed away on September 25, 1964.

Verneal then moved to Lincoln in 1969 to be closer to her son, Lawrence Saager.

She began working at Bryan Memorial Hospital in the housekeeping department where she served as the team leader for 20 years.

Verneal is a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Lincoln. She was a lifetime member of the Seward V.F.W. Auxiliary where she served as the President.

Verneal exemplified the spirit of giving through her volunteer work at Bryan Memorial Hospital for another 15 years.

She enjoyed her family, many dogs and cats, bingo, Las Vegas and all casinos near and far.

Verneal will be dearly missed by all those whose lives she touched along-the-way.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; four sisters, Elva L. McFarland, Zella V. Walsh, Alta I. Rasmussen, Alice L. Alley; three brothers, Orla W. Alley, Lawrence W. Alley, Richard L. Alley.

Verneal is survived by her children, Lawrence “Larry” and wife Shirley Saager, Seward, Larry and Shirley’s fur-kid, Max, Carol Ann Latsha and husband Glenn, Herndon, PA, Beverly Screeton and husband Tracy, Cape Coral, FL; three grandchildren, Lawrence “Christian” Saager, Lincoln, Laney Lee Latsha, Coal Township, PA, Scott Glenn Latsha, Herndon, PA; life-friend, Donna F. Farmer, Winnsboro, TX; numerous nieces and nephews; special loves, Jennifer, Nykki, and Lindsay who cared for her at Ridgewood Rehab & Care Center, Seward, NE.
