Sooner than either of them knew it, Lyra and my mother became much more than just teacher and protegee; a friendship that lasted the rest of Lyra's life and spiritually continues in my mother's. As my grandmother began to deal with diabetes, Lyra, a fellow diabetes patient, helped my mom through a lot of her worries and fears in regard to my grandmother's risky health problems whenever they arose.
In her final years, Lyra's health began to decline; both of her kidneys had failed, requiring her to be on dialysis. At this point she had also moved from Providence, Rhode Island, to Newport, Maine, making it difficult for my mother to ever visit her, and so it would happen rarely. Despite this, they kept in contact on the phone as often as possible.
In the weeks following up to her death, Lyra's health declined faster than they ever had before. Difficulty with properly taking her medication caused her to become delirious and suffer several other complications; eventually her donated kidneys would also fail her, and she died on the morning of July 13, 2018, at the age of 62. My mother was absolutely devastated, and has been in mourning ever since. She blames herself for not going up to see her, but Lyra's sister admits that it's best she didn't, as Lyra most likely wouldn't have recognized her anyway, her health having been so far gone.
Needless to say, Lyra was a very important person in our lives and she will be sorely missed. However, I'm in the belief that she is simply waiting for us in the Summerlands, taking care of our darling Virgil and telling him how much we miss him.
