John James McKelvey was my paternal grandfather. To family and friends he was known as "Jack". He was the son of Edward and Sue Catherine (nee Sweeney) McKelvey of Philadelphia, PA. He was born at home on Woodland Avenue. He was married to Laura Eleanor Lambert. They had one son, Robert Joseph McKelvey, II. John's brother, Robert Joseph McKelvey is buried with him. John's information is on one side of the stone and Robert's is on the opposite side. He was killed during WWII while serving in the South Pacific. He was originally buried in Saipan, Marianas Islands. Once my grandmother remarried. His mother Sue, had his remains brought back to the United States (1949).

The Saipan invasion cost the life Private John J. McKelvey, 24, son of Mrs. Nathan Marple, 827 Magill Avenue, Collingswood. A brother, Sergeant Robert McKelvey 23, was wounded in New Guinea in June but is back in action.
This article was printed in The Evening Bulletin on Thursday, August 17, 1944. It appeared on page 5.
Sadly, part of the headline read 68, 157, Dead on all Fronts. It's heartbreaking to think of how devastating it was for families, churches, communities, and our country as a whole.
