John E. Allen, 69, dies; owned Allen Furniture
BELLEVUE--John E. Allen, 69, of 15230 N. M-66, former owner of Allen's Furniture and Interiors in Battle Creek, died Tuesday afternoon. He was taken to Community Hospital after being stricken at his residence.
He was born in Albion, graduated from Marshall High School and resided in Battle Creek 50 years before moving to the M-66 address five years ago.
He established his business in 1944 when he purchased Greenwood Upholstery Shop in the Verona business district. In 1954, he moved the business to 1085 N.E. Capital Ave., the present site of the family-owned business, which now includes furniture sales and interior design.
The firm was purchased by his son and daughter and he had been semiretired the past four years.
He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Tabernacle and the Pennfield Exchange Club. He also was a former member and past president of the Exchange Club of Greater Battle Creek.
For many years he had enjoyed boating on the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River and along the Florida coast, and had traveled extensively.
Surviving are his wife, the former Alma M. Coppock; a daughter, Mrs. Anthony (Judy) Curran of 319 Iroquois Ave.; a son, James M. Allen of 97 E. Hamilton Lane; sisters, Mrs. Loren (Polly) Lompry or Wayne, Mrs. Audrey Holwerda of 442 S. Washington Ave. and Mrs. Leland (Bessie) McCotter of 106 N. 29th St.; and a brother, George Allen of Cadillac.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Farley Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Pennfield Exchange Club or the Battle Creek Academy.
