Charles Monaghan, age 77, of Terry
April 29, 1939 – November 19, 2016
Charles Monaghan of Terry, MT passed away on Saturday, November 19th, at Prairie Community Hospital in Terry, MT.

Charles was born on April 29, 1939, to Elizabeth Monaghan in Butte, MT. They later moved to Terry, MT and Charles was raised by his grandparents, the Walter Plaths. He attended the Terry schools and worked at the Conoco service station. He graduated in 1957 and then attended the Hansen Mechanical Trade School in Fargo, ND. He returned to Terry and began working at Turnbull Chevrolet. He married Evalena Gaub in 1959 and their son Merrick was born in 1964. In 1963 “Uncle Sam” sent his greetings and Charles was in the Army until 1965. He returned to work at the Chevrolet garage until it closed in 1986. After returning from the Army, he became interested in flying and became a private pilot. He was also commercial pilot and a certified flight instructor, giving lessons to numerous local people including his son. He owned two aircraft over the years, starting with a Cessna 150 and then moving to a Cessna 177 Cardinal. Unfortunately health problems eventually prevented him from continuing to actively fly, but aviation always remained his passion. He is a lifetime member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, and a trip to Oshkosh, WI for the EAA’s annual Fly-In is a treasured family vacation memory. In 1987 he began working at Hines Motor Supply in Miles City, MT and was there until March of 1996. In April of 1996 he began working at Miles City Motor Supply (NAPA) and worked there off and on until January of 2014. Charles and Evalena enjoyed traveling and spent many years seeing different parts of the country while vacationing. Spending time with family was very important and done as often as possible also. He was a member of the American Legion and the Airport board in Terry.

Charles is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evalena, son Merrick (Jamie) of Yankton, SD, 5 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. He has a sister, Nancy Ringgold (John) of Oklahoma City, OK, brother Mike Sanderson of Pittsburgh, PA, brother John Sanderson of New York City, NY, and brother-in-law Tennus Gaub (Debby) of Scottsbluff, NE and nieces and nephews.
