Edgebert Johnnie Smith, Jr, 78, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2018 after a short battle with cancer. He was born in Jacksonville on June 11, 1940. He graduated from Terry Parker where he was the drum major. He went to Western Kentucky State on a music scholarship playing French horn. He was in the Navy Reserve and went into active duty in 1961 when he went to Washington, D.C. to play in the Navy Band.
After returning to Jacksonville he joined his wife in the family business as a professional photographer at Berisford Photographers & Art Gallery. In 1974 as a Coast Guard Licensed Captain, he started Florida Yacht Delivery where he delivered yachts in the water anywhere in the country. He was an active member of SERTOMA, an international service organization for over twenty-five years. He was an avid bass fisherman. Any day on the water was a good day. He was always quick with a joke. He never met a stranger and he always left them laughing.
Johnnie was preceeded in death by his parents, Edgebert and Harriett Smith, his sister Betty Bray and nephew Charlie Boston. He is survived by Rita, his wife of 55 years, his sons Joey and Michael, daughter-in-law Gisela, grandsons Kevin and Anthony, sisters Frances from York, Pennsylvania and Martha from Jacksonville and seven nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home on Saturday, July 28th at 11:00 a.m. 940 Cesery Blvd., Jacksonville, Fl.
