José Gustavo "Gus" López, a resident of Wagon Mound, New Mexico, was taken from us on August 7, 2018 to be with his Heavenly Father.
Gustavo passed away peacefully at home.
Gus was a Catholic all his life and was a member of Santa Clara Catholic Church in Wagon Mound.
Gus was born on December 10, 1918 to Savino López and Salome Fernández López in Piedra Lumbre, NM.
Gustavo was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Amalia Arguello and brothers, Alfonso López, Felipe López and Gillie López.
Gus was married to Frances Maés in June of 1950, they had three children together.
Gustavo is survived by his wife, Frances and children, sons, Edward López, Robert López (Dolores) and Ralph López (Peggy). His grandchildren are Frances Cordóva, Estrella López, Robert López, Angela Johnson and Alyssa López. Gustavo is also survived by great-grandchildren, Kristiana Córdova, Cruzita Córdova, Bernie Jr. Jaramillo, Diego Jaramillo and Analiyah López. Gustavo is also survived by many nieces and nephews and many other family members and friends.
Throughout his life Gus enjoyed the outdoors, ranching, gardening, making beautiful hand carved furniture, hunting and fishing. However talented Gus was in his many interests, the one thing that stands out most was his love and caring for his family especially his grandchildren.
Gustavo was drafted and proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II he was assigned to the 804 Battle Tank Destroyer and served in north Africa prior to entering into Europe as the war escalated. Gustavo received the Purple Heart Medal for injuries endured during the war and the French Croix De Guerre Medal.
Gustavo owned the Wig Wam Bar for many years where many long lasting friendships were made and to this day still remain. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family and close friends.
Rosary services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at Santa Clara Catholic Church in Wagon Mound, NM. Funeral Mass will be on Monday, August 13, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be held at the Santa Clara Cemetery in Wagon Mound, New Mexico. Serving as pallbearers will be Robert López, Lance López, Travis Johnson, Bernie Jaramillo Jr., Samuel López and Diego Jaramillo. The remainder of Gus's grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
