Carl S. Yancey, age 73, of Charlotte, NC formerly of Stoneham, died Wednesday, July 18 in North Carolina.

Born in Woburn at Choate Memorial Hospital on February 16, 1945 he was the son of the late Robert N. and Mary D. (Hepburn) Yancey.

Carl was raised in Stoneham and was a graduate of Stoneham High School, Class of 1965. He had been a Massachusetts resident up until 2012 when he relocated to North Carolina. Upon graduation from high school he went on to attend Delaware State University from 1965-1967; before going on to enlist in the United States Army, serving as part of the military police during the Vietnam Era and was the recipient of a Bronze Star. In 1972, Carl was the first African American to actively enter the State Police ranks in Massachusetts. His tenure as a State Trooper lasted just over 30 years, retiring in 2003. He also had served on the Anti-Gang Unit with the Boston Police and was later employed by the Emerson College Police Department. Carl was a former member of the St. John's Baptist Church of Woburn and also enjoyed traveling.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn (Davis) Yancey; his daughters, Leigh and Lauren Yancey, both of Brockton, MA; his brother, Bradford Yancey and his wife Darlene of Jamaica Plain; his sister, Roberta Yancey of Hercules, CA; and his two grandchildren, Symone Yancey Carter and Sabian Yancey Reid; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and his sisters-in-law. He was predeceased by his brother, the late Robert H. Yancey.

His Funeral Service will be held in the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St., Stoneham on Friday, August 3 at 10am. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday, August 2 from 4-8pm. A private interment will take place at Massachusetts National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lewy Body Dementia Association, Inc., 912 Killian Hill Road S.W., Lilburn, GA 30047.
