Mrs. Wilma Aardsma Paauw (née Wynja) died peacefully in her home on March 23 in Sun City West, AZ at the age of 86.

Wilma is survived by her children, Dirk Aardsma, Grenada, David (Debbie) Aardsma, Scottsdale, AZ, Faith (Dave) Hogan, Bellflower, CA, Herman (Lisa), New Castle, CO, Jack (Susan) Paauw Jr., Mercer Island, WA, Ken (Karon) Paauw, North Bend, WA; siblings, Dick (MaryLou) Wynja, Chester, NJ, Milt (Joan) Wynja, Port Charlotte, FL, Trina (Bill) VanDyke, Whitinsville, MA, Madeline Buma, Port Charlotte, FL. She is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Fannie Wynja, Whitinsville, MA and her husbands, Dirk Aardsma, Denver, CO, and Jack Paauw, Surprise, AZ.

Wilma was born on October 10 in Paterson, NJ to Herman and Fannie Wynja. She graduated from Northbridge High School in 1949 and moved to Grand Rapids, MI to study Psychiatric Nursing. She met Dirk Aardsma there and married him in 1953. Dirk and Wilma moved to Muskegon, MI where Dirk became a pastor. Together they served churches in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Colorado.

They were blessed with four children and twenty-eight years of marriage before Dirk’s death in 1981. Her children remember her as a kind, grace-filled mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals.

Over the years, Wilma not only helped in Dirk’s ministry as a pastor’s wife, but also worked several different jobs. She was a preschool teacher at Ridgeview Hills Preschool, a secretary for the Christian Reformed Home Missions, an administrative assistant at Bethesda Hospital. Four years after Dirk’s death, she married Jack Paauw, who worked as counselor for Bethesda NW in Bellingham, WA. While there, she worked for the Ferndale School District and for a real estate office. Jack and Wilma retired in 1995 and moved to Arizona. Here they were active members of Grace Bible Church where Wilma sang in the choir and participated in bible studies. After Jack’s death in 2003, she began volunteering at Banner Del Webb Hospital for over ten and a half years.

She was also active at Grandview Terrace on the Scholarship Committee, as their secretary.
