The daughter of Charles Robert "Charley" Harlan and Vida Emiline Luck, Carley was born and raised in Madison County, Illinois. Her father worked in the ammunition plant at Olin Brass.

Carley married Francis Lee "Bud" Gresham on 24 Jan 1943 in East Alton, Madison County, Illinois. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

She worked for the Olin Corporation during the war. She was an American Red Cross volunteer and lifetime member of the First Baptist Church in East Alton, where she was a Sunday school teacher.

Carley and Bud were the parents of 1 child.

She was a homemaker, and Bud worked in the human relations department at Olin for more than 43 years.

Known for her quick wit and way with words, it was said that Carley would leave those around her either speechless or laughing. She enjoyed doing cross-stitch and needlepoint, as well as working jigsaw puzzles.

After Bud retired, the Greshams traveled the country in their RV, often with friends. They spent winters in Apache Junction, Arizona and eventually sold their Airstream in order to purchase a place on Gold Canyon Ranch in Arizona. They made their home there after that.

Bud passed away in 2009.

As Carley's health declined, she became a resident at Friendship Manor Nursing Home. She died there in 2018 at the age of 93 years, 11 months and 6 days.

She was survived by 1 son and 1 daughter-in-law of Medora, Illinois; 3 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 nephews; and 1 niece.

In addition to her husband, Carley was preceded in death by her mother and father; 1 brother, Herbert Harlan; 1 sister, Helen Frasier; 1 great-grandson, Matthew Nathaniel Wright; and 1 niece, Della.

Funeral services were performed graveside at 1 p.m. on the afternoon of 14 Aug 2018. Marks Mortuary in Wood River was in charge of arrangements.
