Quietly and peacefully, Sister Mary Johnita breathed her last and was born into eternal life about 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Rosary Care Center, Sylvania, Ohio. She was a person who loved God's beauty as displayed in nature, and you could frequently find her walking, or in these later years riding her wheel chair in the orchard, or somewhere under the sunny blue sky enjoying the beauty of trees, small skittering animals and colorful flowers. But her life was one of dedication and service to God and the children she so lovingly taught for many years. Born to Otto and Dorothy Frederick Elwer on January 17, 1929, Dolores was one of twelve children who lived on the family farm in Delphos, Ohio. She loved the farm and learned from an early age to be of service wherever it was needed. Dolores attended St. John Elementary School where she became acquainted with the Sisters of Notre Dame, and she entered the Aspirant School in Toledo and attended Notre Dame Academy. In 1947 she entered the community. Sister Mary Johnita studied at Mary Manse College where she received her BA degree and spent forty-eight years in the classroom teaching the primary and middle grades. Her love for music urged her to learn to play the accordion, the ukulele and the dulcimer which carried over into her classroom teaching. Sister Mary Johnita's concern for children was evident and her skillful classroom techniques produced capable and happy students. Her places of ministry include: St. John, Delphos; St. Wendelin, Fostoria; St. Joseph, Fremont; St. Mary, Leipsic; St. Joseph, Maumee; Immaculate Conception, Marygrove; St. Paul, Norwalk; St. Mary, Sandusky; and St. Michael, St. James, Sacred Heart, Holy Rosary and Mary Immaculate School in Toledo. After her retirement from the classroom, she spent twelve years as seamstress at the Provincial Center. In February of 2010, she became a resident at Rosary Care Center, Sylvania, Ohio. Preceding her in death are her beloved parents; sisters, Joan and Rosemary and brother, James Elwer. Left to mourn her passing are her brothers, Omer, Frederick and Gale; sisters, Helen Clementz, Gertrude Wenzlick, Ursula Wenzlick, Lea Klaus and Doris Kray; and her religious sisters of the Toledo Province. Visitation will be at the Toledo Provincial Center on Secor Road on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. with Sharing of Memories at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. in the Provincial Center Chapel followed by the burial at Resurrection Cemetery. Arrangements are made by Urbanski Funeral Home, 5055 Secor Rd, Toledo. Any tributes may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame.
