DR. WILLIAM EDWIN POWELL

Dr. William Edwin Powell, local physician, passed away on April 29 after a brief illness brought on by a heart attack. He was 56.
Dr. Powell was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on May 7, 1950.
Powell began his medical practice in 1984 after completing his residency in Family Medicine at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences at Mississippi State University and received his medical training at the University of Mississippi. While at the University of South Alabama, he served as Chief Resident. He had been board certified as a family practitioner from 1984 through 2007.
After delivering over 2,300 babies, Dr. Powell retired from obstetrics in 2005, concentrating solely on family medicine. He treated numerous families and individuals in his twenty-five years of practice in the city.
Powell was currently serving as Chief of Staff at Wayne General Hospital, a position he had filled twice before. In addition, he volunteered as Hospice Medical Director and Home Health Medical Director. He was also a member of the Hospital Executive Steering Committee and was currently serving his second term in this position. He was a past member and chairman of the Hospital Performance Improvement Committee and was the Director of the Pine View Nursing Facility.
Dr. Powell was an active member of First Baptist Church where he served in many capacities. Over the years, he served as deacon, Chairman of Deacons, Sunday School Superintendent, Training Union and Brotherhood Director, Sunday School teacher and choir member.
An avid supporter of the local public school system, Powell devoted many hours as team physician for the Wayne County War Eagle football team and girls' basketball team. He coordinated free physicals for all athletes of the public school system for many years. In addition, he spent many hours lecturing and teaching students from kindergarten to high school, challenging them to higher academic achievement and better health.
Powell was a member of the Army National Guard from 1972 to 1989 retiring with the rank of Captain. Dr. Powell was also an avid whitewater canoeist and outdoor enthusiast. He also loved literature, playing the guitar and playing with his grandsons.
Dr. Powell is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart, Alana Jones Powell; a son, William R. Powell of Hattiesburg; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Sharpie Smith of Waynesboro, Amy and Jim Morse of Germantown, Tennessee, and Sarah Elaine Powell of Hattiesburg; six grandsons, Kaleb, Dylan, and Luke Smith of Waynesboro, Andrew, Thomas, and Edwin Morse of Germantown; a brother and sister-in-law, Anthony and Pam Powell of Waynesboro, and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Alicia and Arthur Burnett of Waynesboro, and Greta and Rick Chapman of Clara; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceeded in death by his parents W.N. (Pat) and Louise Powell.
Funeral services were held on May 2, 2007, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Steve Smith and Reverend DeJuan Walley officiating. Interment followed at Waynesboro Cemetery. Paul Bearers were members of the medical staff at Wayne General Hospital.
A memorial scholarship fund has been set up in Dr. Powell's name at First State Bank.
