Billy Gene Meeks, 73, of Macon, MO, passed away Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at the University Hospital in Columbia, MO.

Billy was born on November 11, 1944, at the family farm in Ethel, MO, the son of William Thomas and Iris Elizabeth (Farson) Meeks. He was united in marriage to Leota Irene Byers on December 25, 1965 by Evangelist Kenneth Thompson in Kirksville, MO. Billy was a graduate of Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman State University) with Bachelors and Masters degree in secondary education. He started teaching school in 1966 at Park Hill, Centralia, and then Montgomery City where he taught for 34 years until his retirement in 2002.

Billy gave his life to the Lord at an early age and never wavered in his commitment to serving him. He was a member of the White Oak Church of Christ near Ethel, Lions Clubs International, and the Missouri Retired Teacher’s Association. He enjoyed many years of attending the Mid-West Bible campout at Eminence, MO, woodworking, cook books, and traveling including a trip to Israel in 1973.

Billy is survived by his wife, Leota Meeks, of Macon; one child, Jamie Meeks of Macon; one grandson; one brother, Fred Meeks and his wife Beverly of Topeka, KS; one aunt, Elva L. Holliday, and many extended family members and in-laws.

Billy was preceded in death by his father, William Thomas Meeks, in 2006; his mother, Iris Elizabeth Meeks, in 2016; an uncle, Edward Farson, in 2014; an aunt, Ava Donovan, in 2015; and a brother-in-law, Junior Stiles, in 2017.

Funeral services will be 3 pm, Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Hutton & McElwain Funeral Home in Macon, with Evangelist Dan Huff officiating. Burial will be in Bell Cemetery west of Ethel. Visitation will be Saturday afternoon, from 1 pm until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Bell Cemetery, Randy Johnson Memorial Fund or Hospice Compassus.
