A 20-year-old Rt. 1, Mount Crawford man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and hit-and-run following a Saturday morning crash in Rockingham County.

Being held at Rockingham jail for $5,500 bond is Kenneth Dale Vandevander.

Killed in the crash was Allan S. Kennedy, 72, of Rt. 1, Port Republic.

State police said that both Vandevander and Kennedy were driving west when the crash occurred about 8:20 a.m. Saturday on Va. 682, about a mile east of Interstate 81 near Mount Crawford.

Vandevander, who was late for work, attempted to pass Kennedy’s car in a no-passing zone of Va. 682 near Mount Crawford, said state trooper W. L. Jones, Jr.

Vandevander’s pickup clipped the rear of Kennedy’s 1977 AMC Pacer and sent the vehicle out of control. The Kennedy auto went off the right side of the highway, hit an embankment and overturned, Jones said.

Kennedy was thrown partially out of the window and was crushed as the car upset, the trooper said.

Kennedy’s wife, Marilyn Ann Kennedy, 38, received minor injuries, but was released after being treated at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Jones said that Vandevander was arrested about two hours later at the C. C. Rosen Tire Company south of Mount Crawford, where he works.

Vandevander’s 1973 Ford pickup was parked with its damaged right front up close to a tree and some bushes across the road from Rosen’s, the trooper reported.

Jones said that Vandevander also was charged with failure to have insurance and for having a concealed weapon. A shotgun was found under the seat of the pickup, the trooper said.

The stretch of Va. 682 where the crash occurred was “clearly marked” as a no -passing zone, Jones said. It was an upgrade near a hillcrest, he added.

Kennedy’s death was the fourth on Rockingham County Highways this year and the second in less than a week.

Kennedy was a retired superintendent of the Massachusetts Fish and Wildlife Service.

He was born at Turners Falls, Mass. Jul 26, 1911, and was a son of the late Jeremiah and Julia Stenple Kennedy.

During World War II, he served in the Navy.

He had married twice. His first wife, Virginia Showalter, died in 1974. His second wife, the former Marilyn Stanley, is a teacher at McGaheysville Elementary School.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, is a sister, Elsie Winslow of Massachusetts.

The body will be cremated. A memorial service will be conducted 8 p.m. Thursday at Friedens United Church of Christ, which Kennedy attended, by the Revs. Thomas Welsch and S. Earl Mitchell.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that contributions be sent to the College of William & Mary General Scholarship Fund.

The Long Funeral Home on Va. 276 is in charge of arrangements.
