Born in West Virginia, he was a son of the late Guy and Connie Shaffer and attended Newark, N.J., schools.
He had worked with Federal Pacific Life Insurance Co., New Jersey and later retired from King Fifth Wheel, Mountain Top.
He was a longtime member of East End Primitive Methodist Church, Wilkes-Barre, where he was involved in many capacities of the church and its Sunday school.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially going to the New Jersey Shore.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Boyd A. Shaffer; and brother, Phillip Shaffer.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of more than 63 years, Sylvia; son, Stanley and wife, Marie; daughter, Sue Trudnak and husband, Bernard; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday from East End Primitive Methodist Church, 79 Laurel St., Wilkes-Barre.
Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and again from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until the service in the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to East End Primitive Methodist Church General Fund.
Arrangements are entrusted to Daniel J. Hughes Funeral and Cremation Service, Wilkes-Barre.
