He was born to Rocky J. Houtchens and Rosemary J. Hertel on April 1, 1982, in Missoula. As a child, Chad was raised in Seeley Lake, Missoula, Deer Lodge, Helena and Japan. He was a 2000 graduate of Powell County High School in Deer Lodge, where he was active in student government and Boys State.
Chad was an informed and critical observer of the world and his place in it. Those who knew him appreciated his sense of humor in this regard. He enjoyed a few especially close friends, and appreciated many others. Chad loved his family, which is extensive and includes many "stepfamily" members. He knew that he was loved and cared for. He will be missed.
Chad is survived by father Rocky, mother Rosemary, stepfather Joseph Olsen and brother Carey Olsen and his paternal grandmother Dorothy LaVoie Crosby.
He was preceded in death by his brother Shawn Houtchens.
