Rev. Lucas Abels served our Church for 16 years. He was called home from his field of labor after an illness of several months on September 12, 1915. Rev. Abels in buried in the Hickman Cemetery.

Rev. Abels was born in Ostfriesland, Germany. He attended Dubuque College and Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. He was ordained to the ministry on April 23, 1874 at the Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, Iowa. He moved to Hickman, Nebraska from Ashton, Iowa. He'd served the Ashton German Presbyterian Church, as well as the one at Zoar, Iowa from 1895 to 1899. His wife was Johanna, called "Hannah."
