John Patton Oliver Sr., 61, of the 1300 block of N. Bay Shore Drive, died Wednesday, May 2, 2007 in a Virginia Beach hospital.

He was a native of Norfolk and was the son of the late Harry Diggs Oliver and Mary Elizabeth Mengel Oliver.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Harry Diggs "Bubba" Oliver III.

He attended Maury High School and was a graduate of Granby High School and served his country in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. John was the president of the family-owned funeral home, H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Inc. which was established in 1865 and the Nansemond Suffolk Cemetery. He was a former president of the Tidewater Funeral Directors Association, was member of the Knights of Columbus, the Virginia Beach Rotary Club and the Princess Anne Country Club. He was a former member of the Virginia Beach Exchange Club.

Survivors include: his loving wife of 22 years, Deona Branch Oliver; his children, John Patton Oliver Jr. and his wife Melissa of Farmville, Va., Jacqueline Alexander Oliver, Madison Branch Oliver, Aven Sterling Oliver, all of Virginia Beach; his brother, Martin V. Oliver and his wife Kay; his sisters, Mary Frances Oliver of Virginia Beach, Betty Ann Oliver Goff and her husband Larry of Virginia Beach, Loretta Oliver Butler and her husband Michael of Chesapeake; his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Cherry Oliver of Norfolk and many nieces and nephews, friends and dedicated staff members. John is also survived by the thousands of families he comforted and helped in their time of need.

A funeral will be held at Galilee Church, Virginia Beach, Monday at 11 a.m. with burial in Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Coleman Tyler. The family will receive friends at the Laskin Road Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.
