WORLD WAR II∼Ben H. Behrens, the son of Herman and Tena (Heronemus) Behrens, was born September 10, 1921, near Little Rock, Iowa. He passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Avera Holy Family Health in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 86 years.
He lived his youth in the Little Rock, Melvin and Sibley areas. After completing his education he served in the National Guard and then the United States Army during World War II from February 10, 1941 through June 2, 1945, in the medical division as an ambulance driver. Ben saw extensive action in overseas campaigns he fought in, the D Day Invasion/Omaha Beach, Battle of the Bulge, Reimagen Bridge to name only a few. After his honorable discharge from military service he continued serving the nation in the National Guard.
On October 31, 1945, Ben was united in marriage to Evelyn J. Schultz, in Sibley, Iowa. Following their marriage the couple made their home in the Sibley where Ben had a construction company and later was employed at Iowa Electric Light and Power. He transferred to Sioux Rapids in 1952. Later they moved and he was self-employed as a dairy farmer and also worked in Marshfield, Wisconsin, as an electrician in the Rollohome Plant. In May of 1978, when they moved to Tyrone/Elk Creek, Missouri where Ben worked in sales as a broker in real estate until 1995, when his health failed. In July of 1999, they moved to Estherville and Ben has been a resident of Rosewood Manor.
Ben was a member of the Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion.
Preceding Ben in death were his daughter, Roxanne; grandson, Steven Behrens; parents; brother, Robert; brothers-in-law, Milton Groote, Rolland Igou, and Gene Schultz.
Memorial services were March 29 at Redeemer Lutheran Church with military rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville.
