Mrs. Ashendorf graduated from North Avenue Presbyterian School (NAPS, Westminster) class of 1945, where she played basketball and made lifelong friends. She then attended Agnes Scott, but soon left to marry Joe Kelly, and to raise her three children in Marietta, where she was active in the First Baptist Church of Marietta, bridge clubs, the Honeysuckle Garden Club, and the Marietta School system’s PTA.
She later married a local Smyrna Dentist, Dr. Bill Ashendorf, and threw herself into planning the women’s activities of the Northern District Dental Society and the Thomas P. Hinman dental society alongside her husband. She also spent countless hours volunteering for the Church of the Apostles and their Leading the Way division.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Joe Kelly and Bill Ashendorf and her brother Bill Whitaker. Survivors include her sister Sarah (Jim) Wallace; brother Collie Whitaker; children Sandra Ashendorf Nix, Pepper (Jo) Kelly, Bob (Sara) Kelly, Kathy Kelly; grandchildren Jack (Pam) Nix, Steve Nix, Kappy Kelly, Nancy (Jared) McReynolds, Alicia (Chris) Evens, Kelly (Blerim) Mema; and eight great-grandchildren and one on the way; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private family graveside service was held at Crest Lawn Memorial Park in Atlanta. Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna was in charge of arrangements.
