Borland enlisted as a private in Company I, 11th Kansas Infantry on September 5, 1862 at Camp Lyon (near Fort Leavenworth) and mustered in September 15, 1862. The 11th Kansas Infantry was mounted in April 1863 and re-designated the 11th Kansas Cavalry. Borland was promoted to corporal on July 1, 1864, and wounded in action at the Battle of Westport three months later. Borland mustered out with the regiment at Fort Leavenworth on September 26, 1865. After the war, he was a charter member of Post #67 (Chickamauga) in Scranton, Kansas.
