They had to close the shop in 1945 when florist’ wire became unobtainable during World War II. The wire was needed to make funeral arrangements.
Before her marriage, and for a short while afterward, she was a long-distance operator for two years.
Schmidt, 90, died in a hospital Saturday of a heart attack. She had been sick a long time and lived in a rest home for five years.
A lifelong San Antonian, she graduated from Brackenridge High School’s first class in 1918.
In 1921 she and Robert A. Schmidt were married here. They had three children. He was a lineman for City Public Service for 50 years.
“She was lots of fun and was a very loving person,” said her granddaughter, Roeann Stubbs of San Antonio. “Each summer she would have all her grandchildren visit her one by one for two weeks each. We spent lots of time at their Bulverde farm. She was always doing things with us.
“She was raised by an aunt, who couldn’t have children. My grandmother was the eighth of nine children. When the ninth child was born, my grandmother went to keep her company.”
Other survivors, all of San Antonio, are a son, Robert Schmidt; a daughter, Laura Lee Janowski; six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Zizik-Kearns Riebe-Saunders Funeral Chape. Burial will be in Mission Burial Park South.
