MR. L. W. STANLEY DEAD
Whiteville and the entire community was thrown into a state of the most profound sorrow late Monday evening when it became known that Mr L.W. Stanley, for the past twelve years Clerk of the Superior Court of this county, had died at five o'clock that evening, following a long period of failing health.
Although Mr. Stanley had been in bad health for almost two years and it had reached such a point that he was compelled to abandon his work last summer, it was not thought that his condition was so serious and the news of his death came as a great surprise, and a distinct shock to the community. Superior Court was in session and adjourned as a mark of respect until 9:30 Tuesday when it reopened for a brief session and took a further adjournment till January 29th. 1917.
Lewis Warrington Stanley was born in this county on August 31st, 69 years ago, his earlier life was spent in teaching school. For twenty-seven years he followed this vocation and then was elected Superintendent of Education for Columbus County filling this position for eight years until 1904 when he was elected Clerk of the Superior Court, which office he held continuously till the day of his death. L.W. Stanley was an active member of the Baptist Church for many years and his sympathies were actively enlisted for all forms of church and educational work.
The sermon was held at the late residence of the deceased at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning and was delivered by Rev. J.H. Poteet after which the remains were taken to the Gore cemetery, three miles south of town and interred in presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends. The Masonic ritual being used. Mr. Stanley is survived by his wife and twelve children.
