Truly one of the important pioneers of California, John Dickson Stephens was born in Bunceton, Missouri on September 23, 1826 to Joseph Stephens and Catherine Dickson Stephens. After starting to study medicine, he made his way to the California gold rush in 1849.
He eventually settled in Yolo County, California and founded the Bank of Woodland. He also owned ranches, the Capay Ditch company, and numerous other businesses.
Mr. Stephens died in San Francisco.
His lineage is as follows: Joseph Stephens and Catherine Dickson Stephens, Peter Stephens, Jr. and Mary Chrisman, and Peter Stephens and Maria Christina LNU (not Rittenhouse). The Stephens family was from Frederick County, Virginia.
