WADSWORTH -- Hugh E. Diem, 85, of Wadsworth, died peacefully on Friday, May 4, 2007, at Hospice at the Inn, Medina, ending a six-month illness.

Hugh was born on March 31, 1922, in Arendtsville, Pa., to the late William Roy Diem and Alice Garrett Diem. The family moved to Delaware, Ohio, in the 1920s, when Mr. Diem became a professor of speech at Ohio Wesleyan University. Hugh began his studies at OWU in 1940, but they were interrupted by World War II. Enlisting in the Marines in 1943, Hugh later trained as a Naval Airman. He left active service in 1946 and returned to complete his chemistry studies at OWU in 1947. At OWU, he met Rachel Ann Yeck, whom he married on Aug. 21, 1948. They celebrated their 58th anniversary last August. After receiving his masters degree in chemistry from the Ohio State University in 1949, Hugh began a successful career as an industrial scientist, first with Colgate Palmolive in New Jersey. His daughter, Ruth Anne, was born there in 1950. In 1951, Hugh took a job with the BF Goodrich Research Center in Brecksville, and the Diems moved to Wadsworth. Their son Daniel was born in 1956, and he predeceased his father in 2003. Hugh retired from BF Goodrich in 1987. Hugh was a member of the Wadsworth United Methodist Church, where he served on various boards and was a member of the choir for many years. A dedicated environmentalist, he served as a member and President of the Izaak Walton League and was also active with the Boy Scouts of America.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel; his daughter, Ruth Anne Diem of New York City; his son-in-law, Jeffrey C. Slade, also of New York City; and his granddaughter, Katharine Anne Slade, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
