Frederick Eppens was an early roasted coffee pioneer. One of the longest lasting coffee merchants on Wall Street and a direct importer of Brazil coffee was Eppens, Smith & Co, headed by Frederick. When he died in 1896, his brother Julius A. Eppens took over as president of Eppens, Smith & Wiemann, a direct importer of Brazil coffee. With his company, Frederick imported 12,719 bags of coffee in 1894 alone. Holland House coffee was a signature brand started by Eppens. Another brother William H. Eppens was also involved in the business.
