Julius was the son of Carl (A.K.A. Charles) Metz and Sophie Louisheim. His Hebrew name was Yoel bar Kalman. His siblings were Louis Metz (born 1869), Wolda (S.P) Metz (born 1870) and Lena Metz (born 1873).

In 1903, Julius married Catherine Hanbury (1874 - 1929). Their children were Mary Irene Metz (1906 - 1986), Catherine Virginia Metz (1908 - 1991), Raymond Charles Metz (1911 - 1940) and Helen Jeanette Metz (1913 - 1988) This family had the custom of addressing their children by their middle names and not by their first names. This causes no end of confusion and sheer challenges for genealogists.

In circa 1929, almost immediately after the death of his wife, Julius moved out of the family apartment. He left his children in the hands of his eldest child, the then 23 year old Irene. Irene did her level best in this difficult role.

In 1934, Julius married a divorcee, Mildred Lewis Bressner (1892 - 1976), of Rockaway Park, NY. She came with a home at 143 Beach 121st Street in Rockaway Park and two step-children for Julius. These were Betty Bressner Pyatok (1920 - 1981) and Raymond Bressner (1922 - 1967).

Julius and Mildred divorced sometime in the mid to late 1940's.

Julius passed away on January 18, 1953 in Ward A4 of Bellevue Hospital, New York City. Julius had been an in-patient since December 22, 1952. Other than "Natural causes," the exact cause of his death was not indicated on the death certificate.
