J.S. Archer, age 65, teacher/coach, son, husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, grand-father and great friend passed away Saturday, September 8, 2018 at his home in Mount Calm, TX to live in his Heavenly Father's home, after a lengthy illness.
J.S. Archer was born February 26, 1953 in Baird, TX to Franklin Earl and Maggie Jewel (McKee) Archer. He was named after he grandfather J.S. McKee with the J.S. standing for Josephus. However due to an error in his birth records, those 65 years ago, he was named Jay Sam in error, but was always known as J.S. to his family.

He graduated from Cross Plains High School, Cross Plains, Texas in 1971 and Howard Payne University Academy of Freedom, Brownwood, TX in 1992 with a Secondary Social Studies Degree, garnering numerous awards and scholarships during his time at Howard Payne. He was also named Walmart Teacher of the Year in 2005.

J.S. married Beverly Horton on April 10, 1982 at the Cottonwood Baptist Church in Cottonwood, Texas and they celebrated 36 years together in 2018. He raised Beverly's children, Lydia and Andrea, as his own and was proud to call them his daughters. He called Reva his adopted daughter, since they shared the same birthday and she was there for both J.S. and Beverly for so many times over the years.

Mr. Archer worked as a coach/teacher for 20 years teaching history, Texas history, social studies, economics, etc., before his health forced his retirement. His first teaching/coaching job was at Star,Texas and the other was at Mount Calm, TX. The school work of his students was very important to him and he taught his students how to play sports, respect each other, and to show kindness and love in whatever they did, even if they didn't want to. He mentored many young men and women about life and had a father's voice when needed and was a hero to all.

He loved to play dominoes and 42, pitch horse shoes at the family reunions, the movies and popcorn that went with a movie, a good meal including Moon Pies, fried pies, peanut butter cookies and Christmas candy, motorcycles, Star Wars and Star Trek, anything wizards and warlords, reading the newspaper including his horoscope and working the crossword puzzle, listening to books on tape, celebrating his birthday by going to Subway ordering a Meat Ball sub, talking about family history, laughing and having fun (he was a big kid at heart), and anything Texas. He was a great craftsman with wood and could build just about anything. Most of the things he built had a painting of the Texas flag on it. He loved history, especially Texas history and he shared his love of history with many students, friends and family! During his last months of life he was teaching history and 6 man football to his Hospice volunteer... He was proud that he was teaching again.

He was a member of Prairie Hill Baptist Church attending faithfully until his declining health.

He is preceded in death by his parents Earl and Jewell Archer; sisters, Rita Swan Archer, Barbara Jean Archer Burns, and Joann Archer Spargos; brothers, Mc Archer, Dan Archer and Rex Archer; daughter, Andrea Yantis and son-in-law, Mark Yantis.

J.S. is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Archer of Mount Calm, TX; daughters: Lydia Swear and husband Troy of Arkansas, and Reva Powell and husband Michael of Waco, TX; sister: Sharron Merry and husband Joe, and nephew J.T. of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; brothers, Guy Archer of Stephenville, TX, Claude Boyd and wife Anita of Clyde, TX and Ted Archer and wife Wanda of Granbury, TX; eight granddaughters, one grandson, three great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins and other extended family members and countless friends. THE COWBOY RIDES WAY
I knew the stakes were high right from the start.
When she dealt the cards, I dealt my heart.
Now I just found a game that I can't play,
And this is where the cowboy rides away.

And my heart is sinking like the setting sun,
Setting on the things I wish I'd done.
It's time to say goodbye to yesterday.
This is where the cowboy rides away.

We've been in and out of love and in-between.
And now we play the final showdown scene.
As the credits roll a sad song starts to play,
And this is where the cowboy rides away.

And my heart is sinking like a setting sun,
Setting on the things I wish I'd done.
Oh the last goodbye's the hardest one to say,
And this is where the cowboy rides away.
Oh the last goodbye's the hardest one to say.
This is where the cowboy rides away.
