A United States Army Veteran, Duane proudly volunteered to serve two terms in the Vietnam War from 1971 to 1975 and then was stationed in Germany from 1975 to 1977. Upon honorable discharge from the Army, he worked at the Benton County CO-OP Extension in Fowler, IN. Over the years, his health declined due to exposure to Agent Orange in the Vietnam War. Duane fought for years for his Agent Orange VA Compensation, but was never awarded benefits. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Organization. Duane enjoyed playing cards, especially poker and loved shooting pool. He absolutely loved spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends.
Nothing made him prouder than being a father and a papa. His children were the most important people in his life. He was dedicated to them and their happiness. Surviving are two daughters; one son; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; four sisters; four brothers; and many nieces and nephews.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Kyle Barnard; and an infant grandson, Deklan Richards.
The family would like to offer their heartfelt gratitude to the Franciscan Health Lafayette East nursing staff. Also, the staff on Blueberry Lane at Saint Anthony's Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for their compassion and care for Duane.
