REV. PHILEMON G. HENSEL
(1923 - 2018)

Manitowoc - Pastor Philemon Noel Godfrey Hensel died at 7:20 a.m. on Friday, the 31st of August, 2018 in Manitowoc aged 94 years 8 months. He rests in the arms of his Lord and Savior.

The son of Pastor Paul and Olga (nee Karth) Hensel, he was born on December the 15th, 1923 in Liberty Township, Manitowoc County. The family moved to Manitowoc in the midst of the Great Depression where he attended Lincoln High School, graduating in 1941. While in his freshman year at the University of Wisconsin Madison, he became aware that his calling was to the ministry. Accordingly, he transferred to Northwestern College in Watertown, Wisconsin. He spent his college summers polishing the 21 inch diameter insides of submarine torpedo tubes at Manitowoc Shipbuilding. Following graduation, he entered service in the United States Army mustering out in 1946 as part of the force reduction following the victories in Europe and Japan.

He began his Seminary training at the Wisconsin Synod seminary at Mequon, but was asked to leave after preaching at Grace Lutheran in Valders. Briefly without prospects for school and needing a job he obtained his Merchant Marine ticket working for the winter of 1946 and early spring of 1947 as a deck hand on big ships on the Great Lakes. Late that spring (1947), he and his lifelong friend Marcus Albrecht (later Pastor) hitch-hiked to California on Route 66 picking oranges and working at a tuberculosis sanatorium. In 1949 he transferred to Concordia Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis (Missouri Synod), continuing to work on the lakes during his summer breaks. He graduated and was ordained in 1951. Finding himself in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1955, he met a young nurse named Esther Springer who lived in the same boarding house. They married on August 18th, 1957 at Grace Lutheran Church in Valders. She remained his devoted spouse for 61 years and 13 days.

Pastor Hensel succeeded his father as pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Valders, Wisconsin, serving faithfully for 53 years until his passing. To keep body and soul united, he spent 29 years teaching college prep English, Journalism, and advising the student newspaper editorial staff at Washington High School in Two Rivers. He had a deep abiding loathing for anyone incapable of communicating in his native tongue and saw it as his mission to change that. Though committed to the arts in every form, and qualified and certified to teach art, he preferred instead to teach English. He sketched, painted and sculpted. He studied History at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and obtained his MA in 1968. The subject of his dissertation: Medieval Canon Law.

In 1984 he traveled to Kenya, East Africa at the invitation of local Lutheran groups wishing to affiliate with the Protes'tant Conference.

He grew up speaking German in the home, at school and in church. He edited Faith-Life, the house organ of the Protes'tant Conference. He translated Greek, Latin, Hebrew and German and had a working knowledge of French. He was an expert in 19th Century German academic handwriting. He was a committed diarist, recording the details of his life and the events of interest to him with great discipline. He loved classical music and sacrificed much to ensure the musical education of his children.

He maintained a one acre truck farm for years on the banks of the East Twin River and was committed to bringing honest, unadulterated food to the family table decades before the notion of "Farm to Table" existed. A well-stocked larder was always a priority and a formal table on every holiday was a foregone conclusion. He had a minor obsession with the dates of important people. It would not be lost on him that he now had his own complete set.

He had a Victorian sense of propriety and the ignorant and ill-mannered met with his disdain and eviscerating disapproval. He valued penmanship and correctly associated that with character.

He was our pastor, our husband, our teacher, our mentor, our advisor, our confessor, our grandfather and our father. He was a giant intellect, and an enormous presence.

"He was a man take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again" - Hamlet

Pastor Hensel is survived by his wife: Esther, Manitowoc, his sons: Seth and his wife Marjorie Hensel, Espuire, Tampa, Fl, Jonathon, of Manitowoc, Paul and his wife Natasha, Ellington, CT, and his grandchildren: Miles, Minneapolis, MN, and Amahlia, Pensacola, Fl. He is further survived by his son by grace: Barrington Roy Neil, Esquire and his wife Robin, Baton Rouge, LA. He was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister.

A memorial service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, Valders, WI on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest at Grace Lutheran Cemetery, Valders, at a later date.
