The son of Heinrich H. & Sarah (Krause) Orner, he married Christina Lauver September 12, 1852, in Adams County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Boyd Anna (b. 06/24/57). Christina died in 1857, and he married Juliann Guise August 10, 1858, fathering Clara L. R. E. (b. 10/14/60), Harvey McClellan (b. 04/22/63), and John Abraham (b. 11/14/65). In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Menallen Township, Adams County, and stood 5' 7" tall with dark hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was federally drafted at the stated age of forty-four, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg February 28, 1865, as a private with Co. H, 91st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 10. 1865.

Based on his stated age at enlistment and assuming it is not a clerical error, either Orner lied about his age with no reason to do so, or he was born prior to 1824.
