Popi was born on April 23, 1938 and grew up in Thessaloniki. Her childhood was filled with family, lots of school friends, cooking with her mother and swimming in the ocean. She was the youngest of six siblings. She loved them all but the brothers didn’t let her get too far out of their sight.
Popi and Gerald’s romance began as a correspondence of letters while Popi was still in Greece. Her older sister, Litsa, had already married and moved to Washington, DC where her husband, John was serving in the U.S. Army. She encouraged Popi to join her, and after she did, Popi continued to correspond with Gerald. Gerald traveled from Texas to DC to meet her in person, they became engaged and were married on May 16, 1959. They settled in Dallas and started to worship at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Swiss Avenue. Popi became very active in the church working with the Philoptochos Society, singing in the choir and planning the annual Greek Food Festival. Over the years she helped bake the pastries and accepted the position of Chair of the Baklava committee, making the big pots of baklava syrup which were so important to the dish. Popi had a beautiful alto voice and sang in the Holy Trinity Choir for over 35 years.
Popi and Gerald had one son, Max, who was the light of their lives. Max with his beautiful wife Matula blessed Popi and Gerald with three wonderful grandchildren (Alexandra, Kostas and Nicole). Popi loved her grandchildren and just couldn’t talk about anything else.
A large family was the center of Popi’s life and she relished in the love of Gerald’s brother and sisters, their children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was happiest in the middle of a big group of people, talking, laughing and cooking up a storm. She will always be remembered for her many beautiful friendships, her thoughtfulness, her laugh and smile, and the many prayer candles she lit for all of us. Popi will be greatly missed by her loving family, her Holy Trinity Family, her caring neighbors, and all who loved her.
May her memory be eternal.
There will be a visitation at 7:00 PM on Monday, September 24, 2018, at The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Dallas. And the funeral mass for Popi will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 25, 2018, at The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
