Dr. Mary Ella Brazil Lowe passed away on September 16, 2018 at the age of 84. Born on May 3, 1934 in Lufkin, Texas she was the only child of the late Earl C. Brazil and Sibyl Burnaman Brazil. She was also preceded in death by her former husband James C. Lowe. She is survived by her two sons James (Jay) C. Lowe Jr. and Mark Brazil Lowe as well as grandson James C. Dr. Lowe grew up and went to school in Redland, Texas a few miles north of Lufkin. After High School Graduation she attended Stephen F. Austin State College and the University of Houston where she graduated with a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education. She later taught at Deer Park ISD and Cypress Fairbanks ISD while completing her Masters in Education from the University of Houston. She earned her Doctor of Education from the University of North Texas and taught in the College of Education, Department of Elementary Education at Stephen F. Austin State University until retirement in December of 1996 after 30 years teaching. She was a long time member of the Methodist Church.

While at SFA she published several articles and co-authored a textbook for student teachers. She also presented numerous papers at national, state and local conventions and frequently worked with teachers and administrators during in-service training. She was elected to the Faculty Senate where she served as secretary and served two terms of the Graduate Council as well as numerous other departmental and College of Education committees. For 12 years she served as adviser to the Texas Student Education Association during which time they won several prestigious state awards. She was also a sponsor of Kappa Delta Pi, national honor society in education and was a member of several national and state education organizations during her career.

In retirement she was active in the Walker County Retired Teachers Association and held chairmanships of two District VI committees for four years as well as for the local chapter. She has volunteered at the Sam Houston Statue and Visitor Center until 2016.

Her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandson, James. She loved the family vacations that they all took together as well as cooking their favorite foods. She was a big Dallas Cowboys fan and no one loved the music of Elvis more than she.

A grave side service will be held at Walker Cemetery in the community of Redland at 2pm on Thursday.
