John David Brooks, 69, of Brookston, Texas, passed away at 6:01 AM, Friday, September 21, 2018 at Stillhouse Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center. Funeral services are set for 10:00 AM, Tuesday, September 25, 2018 in the chapel of Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home with Rev. Daniel Payne officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 PM Monday evening at the funeral home. Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Dr. Brooks was born August 29, 1949 in Paris to David and Fannie Brooks. He married Deborah Kay Payne on July 8, 1976 at First Baptist Church in Texarkana, Texas.

Dr. Brooks was a retired teacher and superintendent having served in the Chisum, West Lamar, Jefferson, Canutillo, and Lancaster School Districts. He was a graduate of Honey Grove High School and received a Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate of Education degrees from East Texas State University in Commerce. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Paris as well as a number of educational, aviation, and golfing organizations.

Dr. Brooks was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Debbie Brooks, and his daughter, Laura Lee Brooks.

Survivors include his daughter, Ashley Michelle Brooks of Brookston, granddaughter, Kaylee Nicole Brooks of Brookston, brothers and sisters-in-law Charles and Martha Brooks of Benbrook, Texas, and Robert Pat and Donna Brooks of Brookston, uncle, Marvin Dunn, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Daniel Payne and Rebecca Payne Mazoch, and a number of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Mike Erwin, Tim Skidmore, Ronnie Reily, James McNeal, John Hightower, and Tommy Merrell. Justin Brooks will be an honorary pallbearer.
