Jacob Painter was married twice:

1. Hannah Bishop, Aug. 1, 1869, Bartholomew Co., Indiana
They were parents of three children: Sarah Elizabeth "Jennie" Painter, George C. Painter, and Martha Rebecca Painter.

Hannah Painter vs. Jacob Painter, filed Jan. 24, 1878. Married Aug. 1, 1869, separated April 1877 when Jacob was convicted of hog stealing and sentenced to State Prison South for two years. She charges cruelty and whippings. They have three children, Sarah E., 7, George C., 5, and Rebecca Painter, 2. Hannah has lived in Indiana the past 35 years, in Brown Co. the last 15 months. She asks custody of the children. Summons for Jacob is sent to Clark Co., Indiana. Box 85, file 7.

2. Surilda Jane Courtney, Aug. 8, 1881, Brown Co., Indiana

Jacob Painter served about two years in Indiana State Prison for grand larceny, 1878-1880. By 1880, he had returned to Brown Co., and married a second time in 1881. On Feb. 5, 1882, he was murdered by Thomas Robinson. His burial place is not stated, although his Brown Co. death certificate does report, "Nashville."
