He was reportedly born either in York County or Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, with Cumberland County comprising the preponderance of reporting. The son of Abraham & Leah (Christ) Brown, in 1860 he was a farmer presumably living in or near Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census with certainty. He stood 5' 3" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Harrisburg June 12, 1863, and mustered into federal service there June 15 as a private with Battery L, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (152nd Pa). (The tombstone displays the wrong battery.) On April 18, 1864, he was among those transferred to the 188th Pennsylvania Infantry, he going to Co. K, and was wounded at the battle of Cold Harbor on June 1, 1864. He returned to duty and honorably discharged with his company December 14, 1865.

He married Mary "Jennie" Darr and fathered Charles (b. @1871), Herbey Carwell (b. 09/04/73), John (b. @1875), Cornelius (b. @1877), George H. (b. 09/04/78), and Mary (b. @1884). In 1890, he was living in Swatara Township, Dauphin County, but died in Highspire from "paralysis of the right side."
