Army Pfc. Jones was assigned to the 984th Military Police Company, 759th Military Police Battalion, Fort Carson, Colorado. Jones died in Diwaniyah of wounds sustained from small-arms fire. Roy attended public schools in Houston and got his GED from Houston Community College. No one in his family knows what prompted him to join the military but they recall a young man full of life and energy who needed a structured environment to grow into maturity. He loved music, dance, theatre, and loved to hang out with his friends. At Willowridge High School, he performed dance solos. On March 6, 2006, Roy entered the military and was deployed to Iraq on September 7, 2006. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge. At Roy's funeral, his pastor said that he wasn't one of those boys that walked around with their pants dropped around their knees – it made the attendees laugh.
