He was a draftsman at U.S. Steel and a retired employee of Jeffboat, a member of the Masonic Lodge in New Albany and an Army veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, the former Eunice F. Reinhardt, one daughter, Mary C. (Cathy) Smith, and one son, Robert E. Oates, two brothers, Jack and Lynn, both of Floyds Knobs, one sister, Melva Kay Adams of New Albany, and several cousins, nieces,and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert K. and Melva Oates, and a sister, Gladys Oates Nall Pridmore.
