The son of George & Rachel Gutshall, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Toboyne Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 7, 1864, as a private with Co. G, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.

He married Matilda Ann Kerr November 28, 1867; children, if any, are unknown. Matilda died in 1875, and he married Sarah A. Adams September 11, 1883, in Knox County, Illinois; children, if any, are again unknown. Birth year also reported as 1846.
