BIOGRAHY

James was born in Kermit, Texas the son of Fae Henderson and Ned Sanford Woolley. He had an older sister, Barbara and a younger sister, Janet. The family lived in Monahans until they moved to Odessa in 1951, when his father founded Woolley Tool and Manufacturering Company. His sister, Barbara died August 1, 1956 at age 16. Jimmy attended Odessa schools, to include Bonham Junior High and he was a 1964 graduate of Permian High School in Odessa. He attended Odessa College for two years. He also attended Texas A&M University.

He enlisted in the Army in February 1968. After basic training at Fort Bliss and aircraft maintenance training at Fort Eustis, Virginia and further training at Fort Rucker, Alabama, he started his tour in Vietnam on September 21, 1968. He was assigned to the 334th Aerial Weapons Company, 145th Aviation Battalion, 12th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade. He was a machinest assigned to the maintenance group. He extended his tour in Vietnam in order to take advantage of the early out program from the Army. He was wounded by a sniper October 13, 1969 during a helicopter recovery mission. He was hospitalized in the 12th Evacuation Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He died from pneumonia secondary to his wounds on October 30, 1969.

He was buried with full military honors at Sunset Memorial Garden's Cemetery in Odessa. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart and the Vietnam Military Merit Medal. He was survived by his parents and his younger sister, Janet.

His parents were killed in a private plane crash June 13, 1973. His father piloted the plane that was enroute from Midland to Long Beach, California. The crash occurred near the village of Povenir, Chihuahua, Mexico. His parents rests next to Jimmy and his sister, Barbara at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. His sister, Janet married Terry Gooch and was living in Odessa at the time of their parent's death. Janet later married Barry Dale Weston and now lives in Austin, Texas.
