His name appears to have been William Sylvester McElheney, but it is apparent that he used his middle name almost exclusively and, as was common then, reversed the order of his first and middle names. This statement is not positively confirmed.

The son of Thomas John & Judith (Bivens) MeElheney, he married Harriet Ann Fegan January 26, 1860, in Cumberland Valley, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Mary Judith (b. 11/23/60), Ann Elizabeth (b. 04/28/62), and Joseph W. (b. 1864, d. 07/28/65). In 1860, he was a laborer living in Fannet Township, Franklin County, and stood 5' 8" tall with light hair and light eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 3, 1864, and mustered into federal service there September 5 as a private with Co. F, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry. Seriously wounded at the battle of Fort Stedman March 25, 1865, he was admitted to a Philadelphia hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. His younger brother Philip served in the same company and regiment.
