George Washington Behn was born in 1813 in Beaufort, South Carolina to the parentage of Arthur Frederick Behn and Susan Plummer Behn. He was one of seven children; 4 boys and 3 girls.

In 1843, at approximately age 30, George was a volunteer in the Georgia Hussars Regiment, attaining the rank of captain at the time of his discharge. During the time he was in this service, George authored a book on Calvary tactics, an "everything you need to know about the calvary" book.

In approximately 1856, George with his family, who were also his slaves, boarded a ship in Savannah, Georgia, headed for Texas. There was the mother of his children, Nancy Green, two daughters, Polly and Laura, sons, John and Frederick Behn, four of six children that were born to them.He always lived close to them wherever they were. The last notation of George was in the 1880 census, where he was living in Anderson, Grimes County, Texas.
