John William Calhoun III, age 67 of Mullens, West Virginia passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2011 at University of Virginia Medical Center following a long illness.
He was born on January 2, 1944 in Eastgulf, West Virginia, to the late John William Calhoun, Jr. (1908~1963) and Virginia (McGinnis) Calhoun (1912~1979). He spent most of his life in Mullens and currently had homes in Mullens, Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia and Sebastian, Florida.
John was a graduate of Mullens High School. As a young man he was employed in Washington, D.C. He returned home, was an employee of Mullens Hardware & Appliance Co. in Mullens, and drove a school bus for Wyoming County Board of Education. He was a retired UMWA coal miner, last working for U.S.Steel #50 as an electrician and mechanic.
John attended the First Presbyterian Church in Mullens. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #151 AF&AM in Mullens, Royal Arch Masons $50 ~ Admiral Chapter in Mullens, and Bluefield Commandery #19.
As an avid fisherman, John enjoyed fishing at Smith Mountain Lake and in Florida. He loved hunting, especially at the Calhoun homestead in Deerfield, Virginia. He will be remembered for his wit, humor, honesty, hard work, ability to fix things and pride in his Scottish heritage.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Louise (Taylor) Calhoun.
Survivors: His wife, Teresa Martoe Calhoun; two daughters; a son; five grandsons; a sister; several nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends in Mullens, West Virginia, Virginia, and Florida.
A celebration of John's life will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, 2011 at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, West Virginia.
